When we do group photos we sometimes mean getting everyone. So before the wedding we scouted out this spot on the playground and ushered the wedding party and guests out after the ceremony for some shots. Use the controls to zoom in and see all the happy faces.

One of the great things about Southern California is the weather and seaside weddings. Jessica and Gautam had both recently. A storm cleared just in time for their outdoor wedding along the water in Laguna Beach. They started with a traditional Indian wedding on the upper deck of Capri Laguna Inn. Next was a western ceremony on the lower deck just above the crashing waves. And I mean “western” literally as some guests came strutting in wearing cowboy hats. Big kudos to coordinator Adina at Fleur de Lis Events for a well run day. What a great ocean view! But don’t take my word for it, click these images for interactive 360-degree panoramas of the scene. Christina + Wally panoramas

I’ve been longing to photograph a wedding just using my panorama rig. My goal is give the viewer a sense of actually being in the middle of the action. I got my chance with Christina and Wally at The Ebell Club in Long Beach. They both happen to be photojournalists too so I wanted to give them something extra special. Judy + Randy

Judy and Randy made it official after dating for 11 years. They began the day with tea, tea, and more tea in a morning Chinese tea ceremony. And get this, the wedding ceremony was at a golf resort…tee off! Lame pun I know:) It was also another cool reunion for me to see her sister Vicky and Joe and the newly minted addition to the family…Aiden. Little Aiden was the charmer of the day being passed from one doting relative to another. I think the prize for longest distance traveled went to an uncle of Judy’s who came from Australia for the big day.

Amy + Mike

True to Chinese wedding tradition, before Mike could claim his bride Amy he and his groomsmen had to jump through a few hoops, albeit updated from those of old China.

First was agility: Passing an orange between them without using their hands.
Second there was the feats of strength: two groomsmen had to drop and do 20 push-ups each.
Third: Improvise a couple songs and serenade the bride.
They passed and were allowed into the house for the first of two tea ceremonies.

As they left her parents’ home they were showered with rice. However, one youngster forgot to take the rice out of the bag and threw the whole thing at the couple…ouch!
The couple didn’t miss a beat when Mike popped a coat button. Amy quickly pulled out a sewing kit and stitched it up herself while dressed in her qipao.

A couple of the games at the reception involved a blind-folded groom and bride having to find each other in a line-up by touch. They each chose correctly on the first try.

With skills like these they’d make great doctors…oh wait, they already are about to become one! Even their cake topper was a couple of MD’s.

Kudos to Amy and her friend Amy Carter, who was the coordinator via Ruby Slippers Events, for a well-planned day at Pacific Palms Resort. Everything was on time.

Judy + Randy engagement

I first met Judy and Randy while photographing her sister Vicky’s wedding a few years ago. Randy was also the best man. It was a party then and I’m sure it will be a party in October.

For the engagement shoot we started out at Pasadena City Hall. The “California Mediterranean” style as it’s called made for a great locale. We wandered around this massive yet graceful building with it’s courtyard, long halls and columns finding spots to shoot in. Trying something new I brought out the panorama tripod (above) for some multiple exposures. Click and drag your mouse around the image to navigate.

City Hall was just the first stop in our marathon photo shoot. We then hustled to downtown L.A. for a little elegance and grit at the Disney Concert Hall and Arts District. They were a little hesitant when they saw on the map that the Arts District abuts Skid Row. I assured them it would be a cool spot. They were blown away by the enormous graffiti murals that made for colorful backgrounds.

Not wanting to miss sunset we jumped back in our cars and dashed off to Marina del Rey. We arrived with plenty of time to work the scene. It got a little chilly out there but Randy kept his honey warm. The day was topped with shots of the sun dipping behind the Santa Monica Mountains. Enjoy the photos! (Comments welcomed below)

Claire + Tan

Claire and Tan, sweethearts of more than 7 years, tied the knot Vietnamese style. It was a day steeped in tradition with offerings of gifts, tea ceremonies, homage to ancestors, gratitude towards parents and family. Claire wore an elaborate red Ao dai and later changed into a white wedding gown for the reception at Pacific Palms Resort. The reception was kicked off by a lion dance and went into the wee hours. The whole day was a reunion for me as well. I had photographed the groom’s sister’s wedding (and those of several of her friends and colleagues) a couple years back and it was great to see the family again.

Barbra + Davis

Davis popped the question to his college sweetheart Barbra on a camping trip to Big Sur on the Pacific coast. So it was fitting that they were married at the Wayfarer’s Chapel overlooking the ocean in Palos Verdes. After the ceremony the couple hopped into Davis’ restored 1946 Willys Jeep Station Wagon for a quick drive to the reception at Los Verdes Gof Course. There they didn’t let a power outtage dampen their spirits. To keep the party going Barbra’s father and uncle sang an acoustic duet of The Everly Brothers’s “All I Have to do is Dream.” Miraculously at end of the song the power suddenly came back. Can they sing for rain too?

Valerie + John

No sandcastle was safe from this couple who made like Groomzilla and Bridezilla (the good kind) for some fun photos on the beach following their wedding at Leo Carrillo State Beach. Valerie and John kept it a cozy affair with close friends and family in a secluded cove with waves crashing in the background. Then it was off to Joe’s Restaurant in Venice for a casual reception.

Katy + Jonathan

Katy and Jonathan went for some unique touches on their wedding day at the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City. There was sword play, Tinkerbell wings, a musical tribute to Flash Gordon, post-reception bowling, and a cake in the likeness of their cat. Congratulations Katy and Jonathan! Have fun in Maui!
